Virgin coconut oil means, oil extracted from well matured and fresh coconut meat (not copra) by mechanical or natural means. It’s best be obtained without using heat, does not undergo chemical refining, bleaching, or deodorizing, so as the oil’s essential properties,  is well protected and preserved, as they were present in their original state in the coconut.

How virgin coconut oil is processed?

BIO-ASLI's virgin coconut oil is produced organically by natural fermentation process  without applying any heat so as its natural fat structure ( fatty acids, particularly its lauric acid and capric acid are preserved as those in its natural form (in well matured and fresh coconut fruit).

We adopted traditional fermentation method - Coconut milk extracted from the fresh coconuts is fermented for 1-2 days for the oil to separate from the water and solid contents (which are mostly protein). Special method is being applied to reduce moisture content and be filtered.

 

What makes Bio-Asli's VCO manufacturing process secured its quality ?

To ensure the natural MCFA and the existing antioxidant in VCO are preserved, we purposely  adopt traditional fermentation, but with innovative modern concept. Therefore, do not use enzymatic reaction as it may disturbed the VCO lipoprotein bonding, do not apply any heating process as it may dispel VCO’s antioxidant. And also by mean of acid catalyst which maight untie MCFA. What is VCO, what is the content of VCO and how could wide range of diseases can be healed and why VCO could benefits our body? This question seems to be discussed regularly and everywhere these days. Thus, many parties are now really eager to get a better understanding of VCO, particularly its content.

Many research proved that VCO contains a unique form of saturated fat that is different from those found in animal and some vegetable fats. Virgin coconut oil is the best source of medium and short chain fatty acids, proven to be rich in natural antimicrobial (antivirus, antibacterial, antifungal and antiprotozoa) and equivalent to breast milk. The presence of abundant antioxidant in VCO, makes it to be something that no  one should resist.

Eventhough coconut oil had been used and consumed for generations, but no standard being set which the world had agreed upon. The only available satandard are The Asia and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) and The Philippine National Standard (PNS) with the code PNS / BAFPS No.22:2004. Both cover the standard quality of VCO, as well as the  manufacturing processes.

As a comparison, schedule 2 shows the quality standard of VCO according to SII (1979). Meanwhile schedule 3 shows the quality standard of VCO according to APCC (2005).  Schedule 2 and 3 show the fatty acid content in VCO and coconut oil. The medium chain fatty acid is higher in VCO compared to coconut oil.

According to AFCC, in VCO's manufacturing, it does not matter  whether process with or without heating, provided that it does not destroy the antioxidants and does not denatures all the chemical structure of the MCFA components.

 Therefore, VCO which are produced by traditional fermentation or by gradual heating could be categorized as VCO. Anyway, PNS outlines a more precise criteria; VCO is produced without undergoing of chemical refining, deodorizing and bleaching (RDB).

Lauric acid and capric acid in virgin coconut oil which are 'medium chain fatty acid', the precursor of monolaurin and monocaprin in human or animal body respectively. Both monolaurin and monocaprin  possessed antiviral, antibacterial and antiprotozoal properties. Lauric acid and its monoglyceride derivatives combating lipid-coated viruses (LCVs) such as HIV virus, measles virus, herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1), vesicular stomatitus virus (VSV), visna virus, and cytomegalovirus (CMV), influenza, and a variety of pathogen bacteria including listeria monocytogenes and helicobacter pylori, and protozoan such as giardia lamblia.

According to ILSI NORTH AMERICA SPECIAL CONFERENCE functional food is defined as food that provides a health benefit over and beyond the basic nutrients.

 As a functional food, coconut has fatty acids which provide both energy (nutrients) and raw material for antimicrobial monoglycerides (functional component) when it is eaten.

Approximately 50% of the fatty acids in coconut fat are lauric acid. Lauric acid is a medium chain fatty acid, which has the additional beneficial function of being formed into monolaurin in the human or animal body. Monolaurin is the antiviral, antibacterial, and antiprotozoal monoglyceride used by the human or animal to destroy lipid coated viruses such as HIV, herpes, cytomegalovirus, influenza, various pathogenic bacteria including listeria monocytogenes and heliobacter pylori, and protozoa such as giardia lamblia. Some studies have also shown some antimicrobial effects of the free lauric acid

Also, approximately 6-7% of the fatty acids in coconut fat are capric acid. Capric acid is another medium chain fatty, which has a similar beneficial function when it is formed into monocaprin in the human or animal body. Monocaprin has also been shown to have antiviral effects against HIV and is being tested for antiviral effects against herpes simplex and antibacterial effects against chlamydia. Dr. Halldor Thormar, the Icelandic scientist, who previously showed that monolaurin, which comes from the fat in coconut, kills lipid coated DNA and RNA viruses including HIV and herpes viruses as well as other microorganisms including gram positive bacteria has just announced the potential effectiveness of monocaprin dissolved in a gel in killing HIV. Monocaprin also comes from the fat in coconut. Thormar and his colleagues plan to continue the tests with monocaprin against chlamydia and herpes simplex virus.

The other benefit of breast milk is it can protect the baby from disease infection. But then, 3.5 tablespoon of coconut oil daily will be enough.

Then, they need to immediately attempt for 40 Km (they are given an extra hour). In this study, each of the cyclists is given MCFA solution, sport beverage, and the other is MCFA mixed with sport beverage. As the result, the athlete who drinks MCFA mixed with sport beverage shows the best performance in the study. He cycles fastest than the other two cyclists. The researchers make the theory that MCFA supplies glycogen and gives an extra energy to the athlete. The glycogen that is supplied is completely used during the three hours of the experiment. The extra glycogen that was supplied by MCFA helps the athlete to perform well. Then, in the next study, the researchers try to find the theory of glycogen production. The samples are among cyclist and each of them are given the same drink as the study before. They need to cycle 60% of their maximum ability for 3 hours. According to the same training, the rate of glycogen in their muscle was measured and the result shows that the rate of glycogen in their muscle is same. This shows that MCFA doesn’t supply glycogen, but it improves the athlete performance. Their performance doesn’t relate with glycogen supplement and it might be relate with other mechanism.

As the result of this study, there are many sports drink and energy drinks that contain MCFA to give instant energy being sold in pharmacies. Usually, MCFA was used in athlete drinks and energy drink. The other is medium chain triglycerides (MCT's oil) in oil form. Usually, it is indicated as MCT on supplement and infant formula label. For those who want to improve their performance, especially athletes, they should take supplement food but not drugs.

Yet, in daily observation, the results are more significant. So that, the best way to boost energy and stamina is by consuming MCFA daily and not just during competition.
